Lumber Weight Calculator

Pick the species and the size, type the length and how many boards, and get the weight of each board and of the whole load. Useful before you load a truck or a roof rack, build a lumber rack, or ship a piece of furniture.

Douglas fir: about 33 lb/ft³ (529 kg/m³) dried to about 12% moisture. Green or freshly treated lumber can weigh 30–60% more.

  1. Choose the species and the nominal size, or type the actual size.
  2. Type the length in feet and the number of boards.
  3. Read the weight of each board and of the load, in pounds and kilograms.

How lumber weight is calculated

Weight = volume × density. Use the actual size, not the nominal one: a 2×4 is 1 1/2 × 3 1/2 in, so an 8 ft 2×4 is 1.5 × 3.5 × 96 = 504 cubic inches, 0.29 cubic feet. At 33 lb/ft³ for Douglas fir, it weighs about 9.6 lb.

Moisture changes everything

The densities here are for wood dried to about 12% moisture. Kiln-dried lumber at 6–8% is a little lighter; green lumber and freshly pressure-treated lumber, still wet from the treatment, can weigh 30–60% more, and twice as much in the worst case. Weigh one board if the exact load matters.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 2x4x8 weigh?

About 8–11 lb dry: SPF about 8 lb, Douglas fir 9.6 lb, southern yellow pine 10.5 lb. A wet pressure-treated 2x4x8 weighs about 13–15 lb.

How much does a 4x4x8 weigh?

About 17–25 lb dry in softwoods, depending on the species (22 lb in Douglas fir), and 30–35 lb pressure-treated and wet.

How much does a board foot of oak weigh?

About 3.7 lb for red oak and 3.9 lb for white oak, dried: a board foot is 1/12 of a cubic foot.

What is the heaviest common wood?

Of the woods here, hickory, about 51 lb/ft³, then white oak and hard maple. Cedar and white pine are the lightest, about 23–25 lb/ft³.
