Plywood Thickness Chart
Plywood is thinner than its name: 3/4 in plywood is actually about 23/32 in (18.3 mm), 1/2 in is 15/32 in (11.9 mm) and 1/4 in is about 7/32 in (5.5 mm). In metric countries sheets are sold by their real size: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 mm.
Nominal vs actual plywood thickness
| Nominal | Actual (typical) | Metric | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1/8 in | 3/32–1/8 in | 3 mm | Templates, drawer bottoms of small boxes |
| 1/4 in | 7/32 in | 5.5–6 mm | Cabinet backs, drawer bottoms |
| 3/8 in | 11/32 in | 8.7–9 mm | Curved work, light panels |
| 1/2 in | 15/32 in | 11.9–12 mm | Drawer boxes, small cabinets, sheathing |
| 5/8 in | 19/32 in | 15.1–15 mm | Subfloors, shelves with short spans |
| 3/4 in | 23/32 in | 18.3–18 mm | Cabinet carcasses, shelves, furniture |
| 1 in | 31/32–1 in | 24–25 mm | Workbench tops, long shelves |
| 1 1/8 in | 1 1/8 in | 28–29 mm | Subfloors over wide joist spacing |
Actual thickness varies a little between mills and between sheets of the same stack. Always measure the board you will use before cutting grooves (dadoes) or setting up a cabinet: a part that is 1/32 in thinner, times two sides, changes every inside dimension.
What is 23/32 in inches?
23/32 in is 0.719 in, or 18.3 mm: 1/32 in (0.8 mm) less than 3/4 in. It is the real thickness of most “3/4 in” plywood, so 23/32 plywood is what you get when you buy 3/4 plywood. It is not the same as 5/8 in: that size is stamped 19/32. Each actual plywood thickness in 32nds and the size it is sold as:
| Stamped (actual) | Decimal inches | Millimetres | Sold as |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7/32 in | 0.219 in | 5.6 mm | 1/4 in plywood |
| 11/32 in | 0.344 in | 8.7 mm | 3/8 in plywood |
| 15/32 in | 0.469 in | 11.9 mm | 1/2 in plywood |
| 19/32 in | 0.594 in | 15.1 mm | 5/8 in plywood |
| 23/32 in | 0.719 in | 18.3 mm | 3/4 in plywood |
| 31/32 in | 0.969 in | 24.6 mm | 1 in plywood |
So 15/32 is the actual thickness of 1/2 in plywood, 19/32 of 5/8 in plywood and 11/32 of 3/8 in plywood. In mm, the standard plywood thicknesses are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 mm, and those are close to the real size.
Why is plywood thinner than its name?
The nominal size is the thickness before the faces are sanded smooth. Sanding removes about 1/32 in, and mills also size sheets to meet structural ratings rather than the round number. Construction sheathing is often stamped with its real size, such as 15/32 or 23/32.
Which thickness for furniture?
| Part | Thickness |
|---|---|
| Cabinet sides, tops, bottoms | 3/4 in (18 mm) |
| Shelves up to about 30 in (760 mm) span | 3/4 in (18 mm) |
| Longer shelves | 1 in (24–25 mm), or 3/4 in with a front strip |
| Drawer sides | 1/2 in (12 mm) |
| Backs and drawer bottoms | 1/4 in (6 mm) |
In a cut list, enter the real thickness: our furniture plans calculate tops, bottoms and shelves from the board thickness, so a 23/32 in board gives slightly longer parts than an 18 mm one.
Frequently asked questions
What is the actual thickness of 3/4 plywood?
Usually 23/32 in, about 18.3 mm. Some hardwood plywood is closer to 0.70 in (17.8 mm).
Is 23/32 the same as 3/4?
Almost: 23/32 in is 0.719 in and 3/4 in is 0.750 in, a difference of 1/32 in (0.8 mm). Plywood stamped 23/32 is sold as 3/4 in plywood.
What is the actual thickness of 1/2 and 5/8 plywood?
1/2 in plywood is usually 15/32 in (11.9 mm) thick and 5/8 in plywood 19/32 in (15.1 mm). 3/8 in plywood is 11/32 in (8.7 mm).
How thick is 1 inch plywood?
Between 31/32 and 1 in (24–25 mm). It is used for workbench tops and long shelves.
What thickness of plywood for cabinets?
3/4 in (18 mm) for the carcass and shelves, 1/2 in (12 mm) for drawer sides and 1/4 in (6 mm) for backs.
What is the thickest plywood you can buy?
1 1/8 in (28–29 mm) is common for subfloors; thicker panels are made by gluing two sheets.
