FreeBookshelf Plans
These bookshelf plans are simple, sturdy shelving units made from sheet goods: two sides, a top and bottom, fixed shelves and optional dividers. Change the width, height, depth and number of shelves, and the cut list and the free span of every shelf update.
Bookshelf Plans
The span matters more than anything: an 18 mm shelf loaded with books starts to sag beyond about 800 mm. The plans warn you and let you add a divider. Shelves are cut 2 mm short of the opening so they slide in without forcing the sides apart.
From a small bookcase to a full wall of shelves, each plan comes with the cut list worked out.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best wood for a bookshelf?
Plywood is the stiffest sheet for long shelves. MDF and melamine are cheaper and paint or clean well, but sag sooner: keep their spans shorter.
How do I stop bookshelf shelves from sagging?
Keep the span under 800 mm for 18 mm board, add a divider, use thicker board, or glue a strip under the front edge.
