FreeFeet and Inches Calculator
Type lengths the way a tape measure reads them, 5' 6 3/8" or 66 3/8, then add them up, take one from another or divide a board into equal parts. The answer comes in feet, inches and fractions to the nearest 1/16 in (or 1/8 to 1/64), in decimal feet and in millimetres.

How to add feet and inches
Add feet to feet and inches to inches, then turn every 12 inches into a foot. Fractions need the same bottom number first: 3/8 + 1/2 is 3/8 + 4/8 = 7/8. So 5' 6 3/8" + 2' 4 1/2" = 7' 10 7/8".
To subtract, borrow a foot as 12 inches when the inches are short: 7' 2" − 3' 8" becomes 6' 14" − 3' 8" = 3' 6". Fractions borrow the same way: 4 1/8" − 2 3/4" is 3 9/8" − 2 6/8" = 1 3/8".
Dividing a length into equal parts
Divide the length in inches and round to the nearest 1/16: an 8 ft board in five equal pieces is 96 ÷ 5 = 19.2 in, about 19 3/16 in. Every saw cut removes about 1/8 in, so for five pieces from one board take four kerfs off first: (96 − 4 × 1/8) ÷ 5 = 19.1 in, about 19 1/8 in.
For equal shelf spacing inside a cabinet, subtract the shelf thicknesses before you divide. Our furniture plans and the cut list optimizer do this for you.
Decimal feet and inches
Plans and laser measures often give decimal feet. The whole number is the feet; multiply the decimal part by 12 for the inches: 5.75 ft is 5 ft and 0.75 × 12 = 9 in, so 5' 9". 0.1 ft is 1.2 in, about 1 3/16 in, not 1 in. The chart below converts every 0.05 ft.

Frequently asked questions
How do you add feet and inches together?
Add the feet and the inches separately, then carry every 12 in as a foot: 5' 8" + 3' 7" = 8' 15" = 9' 3".
How many inches is 7.5 feet?
90 in: 7.5 × 12 = 90, or 7' 6".
How do you convert decimal feet to feet and inches?
Keep the whole number as feet and multiply the decimal part by 12: 5.75 ft = 5' 9". For a fraction, multiply the leftover decimal inches by 16.
What is 1/16 of an inch as a decimal?
0.0625 in, or 1.59 mm. 1/8 in is 0.125, 1/32 in is 0.03125.
