Wine Rack Plans

A wine rack that holds bottles on their side in rows: each row is a pair of slats, one at the back with wide notches for the body of the bottle and one at the front with narrow notches for the neck, between two side panels with a shelf on top for glasses or a decanter. The defaults hold 35 bottles, 7 rows of 5, in a rack 600 mm wide and 900 mm tall. It stands on the floor or mounts on the wall from its cleat. Every cut is straight and the notches are drilled with a hole saw, so it is an easy first woodworking project.

How it is built

  • Drill the notches before assembly: clamp the slats in pairs edge to edge and bore every hole on the joint, 95 mm apart.
  • Glue and screw each slat between the sides with a spacer block, so every row is level and 100 mm above the last.
  • Hang the rack by its cleat on a wall cleat or screw it to the studs: a full rack weighs about 1.5 kg per bottle.

Common mistakes

  • Setting both slats at the same height: the bottles tip toward the neck and the corks dry out.
  • Spacing the notches closer than 95 mm: wide bottles will not sit side by side.

Tools you need

  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Drill with 76 mm and 32 mm hole saws
  • Drill/driver
  • Clamps

Frequently asked questions

How many bottles does it hold?

One bottle for every 95 mm (3 3/4 in) of inside width in each row, and one row for every 100 mm (4 in) of height: the default 600 × 900 mm rack holds 35 bottles, a 1200 mm wide one about 12 per row.

What are good wine rack dimensions?

About 300 mm (12 in) deep, so the body of a 750 ml bottle rests on the back slat and the neck on the front one, with rows 100 mm (4 in) apart. Width and height are up to you.

How do I cut the notches?

Clamp two slats edge to edge and drill on the joint with a hole saw: each hole makes a half-round notch in both slats. Use 76 mm (3 in) for the body slats and 32 mm (1 1/4 in) for the neck slats, one hole every 95 mm.

Why is the front slat higher?

The neck is thinner than the body, so the front slat sits 20 mm higher to keep the bottle level and the cork wet.
