Closet Organizer Plans

Turn a plain reach-in closet into an organised one. A tower of shelves stands in the middle; on each side, hanging space for clothes under a long top shelf that rests on the tower and on cleats screwed to the walls. Enter the width of your closet and the tower width, and every board is sized to fit. It is a complete DIY closet system: tower, shelves and hanging rods.

How it is built

  • The tower stands on an 80 mm plinth in the middle of the closet and is screwed to the back wall.
  • Each top shelf rests on the tower top edge, on a cleat along the back wall and on a cleat on the end wall: screw the cleats into studs.
  • Hanging rods go 50 mm under the top shelves, about 300 mm from the back wall.

Common mistakes

  • Making the tower as deep as the closet: hangers on each side then catch on it.
  • Fixing the cleats to plasterboard only: a loaded shelf of clothes pulls them out.

Tools you need

  • Track saw or circular saw with a guide
  • Drill/driver
  • Spirit level
  • Stud finder

Frequently asked questions

How deep should a closet organizer be?

The tower 300–400 mm (12–16 in) so it does not crowd the hangers; the closet itself about 600 mm (24 in) deep for clothes on hangers.

Where do the hanging rods go?

Under each top shelf, 50 mm below it and about 300 mm from the back wall, on rod sockets screwed to the tower side and to the end wall.

Can I add a second rod for short clothes?

Yes: fit a second rod about 1000 mm from the floor on one side for shirts and folded trousers, and keep the other side for long clothes.
