How it is built

  • Drawer box = inside width − 26 mm for two 13 mm side-mount slides.
  • Each drawer box is 40 mm lower than its opening and 60 mm shorter than the cabinet depth: buy the longest slide that fits the box.
  • Fronts overlay the carcass with a 3 mm gap all round.
  • Always fix a dresser to the wall with an anti-tip kit.

Common mistakes

  • Sizing the drawer box to the opening and forgetting the slides.
  • Skipping the anti-tip strap: a dresser with open drawers tips over easily.

Tools you need

  • Table saw or track saw
  • Drill/driver
  • Drawer slide jig
  • Clamps
  • Edge banding iron

Frequently asked questions

What slides does this dresser use?

Side-mount ball-bearing slides that need 12.7 mm (1/2 in) on each side. Choose the length closest to, but not longer than, the drawer box.

How deep is a dresser?

Usually 400–550 mm; deeper dressers hold more but need more floor space in front to open the drawers.

How many drawers should a dresser have?

Three to five in one column. Below about 120 mm, a drawer opening is too shallow to be useful, so use fewer, deeper drawers.

Can I use 16 mm board for the drawer boxes?

Yes. The plan uses the carcass board; with thinner sides the boxes are lighter, and the box width stays the same because it is set by the slides.
