How it is built

  • Mark the shelves and dividers from one side with a spacer block cut to the cubby size, so every cubby is the same.
  • Glue and screw the dividers through the shelves, alternating sides so the screws do not meet.
  • Level the cabinet on the floor before the turntable goes on.

Common mistakes

  • Making the cubbies exactly 12 3/8 in: the sleeves jam. Keep them at least 13 in inside.
  • Making it shallower than the records: sleeves stick out and get knocked.

Frequently asked questions

What size cubby fits vinyl records?

LP sleeves are about 12 3/8 in (315 mm) square, so cubbies 13–13 1/2 in (330–345 mm) inside and at least 13 in deep hold them with room for your fingers. The default is 335 mm square and 380 mm deep.

How many records fit in a cubby?

About 60–80 LPs in a 13 in cubby, depending on the inner sleeves and gatefolds: roughly 70. Do not pack them tight, or the sleeves wear and the records warp.

How heavy is a record collection?

About 15 kg (33 lb) per full cubby. Shelves under 400 mm wide carry that easily in 18 mm (3/4 in) plywood; screw a tall unit to the wall.

Can the turntable sit on top?

Yes: the top is solid and stiff. Level it, keep the turntable away from the speakers, and add felt or isolation feet if the needle jumps.
