Litter Box Cabinet Plans

A litter box cabinet that hides the litter box inside a piece of furniture: the cat enters through a hole in the side into a small entry bay, then walks through a hole in the divider to the litter box, which leaves most of the litter on its paws behind. Doors at the front open both bays for cleaning, and the top is a shelf or a bench. The defaults fit a large litter box about 24 × 18 in.

How it is built

  • Cut a 180–200 mm (7–8 in) hole in the side of the entry bay and another in the divider, both about 80 mm above the cabinet floor.
  • Seal the inside, edges included, before assembly, and put a mat or a tray under the litter box.
  • Drill vent holes high in the back of the litter bay, and fit magnetic catches so the doors stay shut.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the hole straight into the litter bay: the entry bay is what keeps litter inside.
  • Building it from raw MDF or particle board: one accident and it swells.

Tools you need

  • Circular saw or table saw
  • Jigsaw
  • Drill/driver
  • Hinge jig

Frequently asked questions

What size should a litter box cabinet be?

Big enough for the litter box plus room to scoop: for a large box about 24 × 18 in (610 × 460 mm), a cabinet about 40 in (1000 mm) wide, 22 in (550 mm) deep and 26 in (650 mm) tall. Measure your box and add 25 mm on each side.

How do I stop the smell?

Drill a row of vent holes high in the back or the side, scoop every day and seal the inside with paint or varnish so urine cannot soak in. A small fan with a carbon filter helps in closed rooms.

Will my cat use it?

Usually within days. Put the old box inside with the doors open at first, then close them once the cat goes in on its own.

What is the best material?

Melamine-faced board or plywood sealed on every face: both wipe clean. Avoid raw MDF and particle board, which swell when wet.
