TV Stand Size Guide

A TV stand should be wider than the TV itself, ideally by 6–12 in (15–30 cm) or more, and low enough that the middle of the screen sits at seated eye level, about 42 in (107 cm) from the floor. That makes most stands 18–28 in (46–71 cm) tall and 16–20 in (40–50 cm) deep. The table gives the size for each screen. The average TV stand height is about 24 in.

TV stand size for each TV

TV sizes are measured on the diagonal. A 16:9 screen is about 0.87 times its diagonal wide and 0.49 times tall.

The heights assume the TV stands on its own feet or pedestal, about 3 in (8 cm) tall, and a seated eye height of 42 in. Bigger screens need lower stands to keep their middle at the same height.

Height: the screen at eye level

Sit on your sofa and measure from the floor to your eyes: for most adults it is 38–42 in (97–107 cm). The middle of the screen should be at that height or a little below; looking up at a screen strains the neck after an hour. Then:

stand height = eye height − half the TV height − the height of its feet

For a 65 in TV (32 in tall, on 3 in feet) and a 42 in eye height: 42 − 16 − 3 = 23 in.

Depth and the TV's feet

A stand 16–20 in (40–50 cm) deep holds the TV, a soundbar and a games console. Before choosing the width, look at where the TV's feet are: many large TVs stand on two feet near the ends of the screen, so a 65 in TV may need 50 in or more between its feet. A centre pedestal is easier: any stand deeper than the pedestal will do.

Storage and cables

Plan open bays or ventilated doors for the devices: a games console or receiver needs 2–4 in of air around it. Drill a 2–3 in (50–75 mm) cable hole in the back of each bay, or leave the back open behind the devices.

Building a TV stand

A TV stand is a long, low cabinet, easy to build to the exact width of your wall and the height your screen needs. Our TV stand plan sizes every panel, shelf and door from the width, height, depth and number of bays you type:

Frequently asked questions

What size TV stand do I need for a 65 inch TV?

At least 59 in (150 cm) wide, ideally 66–72 in, because a 65 in TV is about 57 in wide. A stand about 23 in tall puts the middle of the screen near seated eye level.

What size TV stand for a 75 inch TV?

At least 68 in (173 cm) wide, ideally 74–80 in, and about 20–21 in tall: a 75 in TV is about 65 in wide and 37 in tall.

What is the standard TV stand height?

Most TV stands are 18–28 in (46–71 cm) tall. The bigger the TV, the lower the stand, so the middle of the screen stays near your eyes, about 40–42 in from the floor when seated.

How deep should a TV stand be?

16–20 in (40–50 cm). Check that the TV's feet fit: on many TVs they sit near the ends of the screen, so the stand must also be almost as wide as the TV.
