Nightstand Height

Most nightstands are 24–28 in (61–71 cm) tall, but the right height is set by your bed: the top of the nightstand should be level with the top of the mattress, or within 2 in (5 cm) of it. That way you can reach a glass or a phone without lifting your shoulder or leaning over the edge. The average nightstand dimensions are 26 in (66 cm) tall, 20 in wide and 16 in deep, and a normal nightstand height is anywhere from 24 to 28 in.

How to find your nightstand height

Measure from the floor to the top of the mattress, with any topper on it. Then pick a nightstand within 2 in of that number. A slightly taller nightstand is easier to reach from bed than a lower one.

For a floating or wall-hung nightstand, measure the same way and fix the top at mattress height.

Width20 in (51 cm)16–30 in (41–76 cm)
Depth16 in (41 cm)12–20 in (30–51 cm)

Match the width to the bed and the room. Twin and full beds look right with 16–22 in nightstands, queens with 20–26 in and kings with 24–30 in. Keep the depth no greater than the space between the bed and the walkway: you need about 24–30 in (61–76 cm) clear to walk past.

What goes inside

A drawer for the small things and an open shelf for books is the classic layout. A drawer 4–6 in tall holds glasses, chargers and a book; a deeper bottom drawer or a door suits blankets. If you put a lamp on it, check that the top is wide enough for the lamp base plus a phone and a glass, about 18 in at least.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard nightstand height?

24 to 28 in (61–71 cm). The right height for your bed is level with the top of the mattress, or within 2 in (5 cm) above or below it.

Should a nightstand be taller than the bed?

Only slightly. Up to 2 in above the mattress is comfortable; much higher and you reach up for your glass, much lower and you lean over the edge.

How wide should a nightstand be?

18–24 in (45–60 cm) for most beds. With a king bed or in a large room, 24–30 in looks more in proportion.

How far should a nightstand be from the bed?

2–4 in (5–10 cm), close enough to reach without leaving the bed and far enough to make the bed.
